VARO Energy ("VARO") has been a major downstream player in North West Europe since 1 September 2015. VARO has an ambitious strategy to become a leading player in the European energy transition. Currently it refines, stores and distributes (bio)fuels for the European market and is a major player in the area of blending and trading sustainable biofuels. The group has operations in Switzerland, Germany, France and the Benelux, it employs a total of 1500 people in Europe.

VARO has numerous international projects, inter alia in the areas of hydrogen, biogas, electricity, carbon trading and renewable and sustainable biofuels. Senior Legal Counsel M&A
based in Rotterdam or Hamburg
In this new and important role, you are the go-to person for all M&A activities of the group, in and outside of the Netherlands. You draft and lead the legal workstream for Business Development and M&A projects from start to finish. You are responsible for drafting, reviewing and negotiating purchase agreements and other legal documents, such as offer letters, NDAs, MOUs, LOI’s, SPAs, shareholders’ agreements, joint venture agreements and related financing agreements. You provide support to and are a sparring partner for the General Counsel, the Chief Strategy Officer and the Group Renewable Director. You are a member of the cross country M&A team and you play an important role in the company’s ambition to become a leading player in the European energy transition.


  • Dutch or German qualified lawyer with approximately 5-8 years of work experience
  • gained at a reputable law firm and/or as inhouse counsel
  • substantial knowledge of and experience with M&A and joint venture projects
  • excellent project management skills, down to earth, solution-driven
  • experience with the energy sector is a plus, but not a prerequisite
  • self starter, can-do mentality
